Mental health and wellbeing is a priority issue for Australian basketballers, so the ABPA is helping players make an impact by providing Mental Health First Aid training to Player Delegates and Mental Health Ambassadors each year.

The course not only helps players manage their own mental health, but equips them with the essential skills and accreditation to support their team mates, family and friends.

The course has had a big impact on the players who have completed it so far, and our aim is to have an accredited MHFA player in every WNBL and NBL team in 2020/21.

The blended MHFA community course covers:

  • The signs and symptoms of common and disabling mental health problems
  • Ways to help
  • Where to go for professional help
  • How to provide mental health first aid in a crisis using an evidence-based action plan

The course is based on guidelines developed through expert consensus of people with lived experience of mental health problems and professionals.
