The Australian Basketballers Association (ABA) is pleased to announce the election of two new WNBL player leaders.

Rachel Jarry of the Canberra Capitals and Darcee Garbin of the Townsville Fire have been elected as President and Vice-President of the WNBL playing group.

Rachel Jarry replaces recently-retired WNBL star Carly Wilson as President of the WNBL player cohort. Jarry recently represented Australia at the Rio Olympics and is a dual Olympian.

“I’m extremely humbled to be elected as President of the WNBL players,” said Jarry.

“This league is full of strong and impressive athletes who compete at an international standard day in, day out and it is an honour to represent them.”

Darcee Garbin recently won a gold medal at the World University Games leading Australia with an impressive tournament, including 30 points, 10 rebounds and six assists in the grand final.

“As a young player in the WNBL, it is exciting to be elected a leader of the playing group. We all have the same motivation, growing the sport for the good of the game and players.”

Jacob Holmes, ABA CEO, paid credit to former WNBL President, Carly Wilson.

“As an association we have been extremely lucky to have Carly as our President of WNBL players for many years. She represented the players with class, honesty and integrity.”

Holmes went on to congratulate Jarry and Garbin on their elections.

“The ABA welcomes both Rachel and Darcee to their new roles and thanks them for taking on these important positions,” he said.

“Rachel has been a high-level performer for many years. She represents the great qualities we value in our leaders – resilience, toughness and consistency – qualities which I’m sure she will bring to her new role.

“Darcee is an emerging superstar in the WNBL and it is a testament to her character that she has put her hand up for this role at such a young age.

“This is an exciting time for basketball players in Australia. The game is growing on the back of outstanding players and important investment. This reemergence will see the ABA become ever more relevant and there are no better people to be at the forefront of this for the WNBL than Rachel and Darcee.”
